Small Spaces: The Office

Well, this is where the magic happens.  LOL!  All the blogging, writing, Bible studying, brainstorming, homeworking, and beautifying magic, happens right here.  See this is not just a desk, it’s my office, my vanity, my bookshelf, my home file for family documents, my craft center, and pretty much my only personal space in my whole apartment.  Because even my bed is used as a couch that anyone who comes over can sit on.

So, given the enormity of the job this area has to perform, it’s no wonder I spent weeks waiting for the right one to show up on Craigslist.  I had the top hutch left from the apartment flood we had last fall, the sideboard didn’t make it sadly.  The desk had to be large enough to house the hutch and leave me plenty of desk space left for spreading out.

The only thing that might be different than what you would normally find is underneath this huge desk, is a huge space that I couldn’t bear to waste.  As you can see I can fit eight paper case cases, easily!  My plan is to get a piece of material that is complimentary to my decor and make a desk ‘skirt’ to cover all the boxes.  I have already bought some paint to make the hutch the same color as the desk.

I had some of these shelf items on my flat desk surface but it always seemed cluttered and made me a nervous wreck.  I had two shelves collecting dust in a box.  So I decided to merge function and “Goodwill fashion”.  The frames were all .50 Goodwill finds that I painted.  I know the pink is pretty in your face but I was hoping it comes across more as a ‘pop’ of color instead.  When all of my herbs start coming in this summer, I am going to dry some and use some decorative scrapbooking paper to frame them as art on the top shelf.

Pulling the filing cabinet out from underneath the desk accomplishes two things.

  1. It creates a writing ledge when I’m working on stuff.  I just put my notebook down on the printer and write away.
  2. And, it creates enough space under the desk to put 4 of the 8 boxes that are under there.

This one teeny, tiny drawer holds an inordinate amount of stuff!  I know you might think the one drawer just won’t work for you if you have some of the same issues I have with small space.  But I promise if you give it a try, pare down to what you absolutely have to keep, and uniformly pack things in neat and tidy, you can make even a small space hold a huge amount of treasures!

How do you overcome your storage solutions?

Small Spaces: Closet Storage

My closet

Even a normal closet is hard to photograph with no light.  But, our TINY closets are even harder to see!!  I don’t have extra money to buy closet storage solution pieces to make our closets hold more.  Otherwise, I’m sure I could pack them full like nobody’s business! LOL…  But I do have a few things I use to help with making more fit into a tight squeeze of a space.

My closet, above, is the closet in the living room by the front door.  It is intended to the the clothes closet.  I have to use it as my clothes closet since the living room is also my bedroom.  I have a shoe holder on the inside of the door holding scarves, wallets, gloves, and shoes-of course!

On the top of the closet there are two white linen baskets, one with under things and one with socks.  In between the two baskets are all of my ‘house clothes’.  You know the ones, what you put on when you know you aren’t leaving the house for the day, the ones NO ONE sees you in!  My plan is to get one storage piece with drawers the exact width and depth of that shelf to put those things away inside.  Then, I can store boxes on top of that piece and get more to fit.

Let me give you some tips on how to organize your clothes so you can maximize the floor space for storage and the time it takes to get to and store things.

  1. Hang like items together.  I put all short sleeves together, pants together, and etc.  This makes laundry day and getting ready much easier!
  2. Hang long dresses on one end and at the other end hang pants.  This leaves the bottom space open for storage with the longer items on the ends out of the way.
  3. Re-purpose boxes of all shapes and sizes.  You never know what little hole will perfectly hold that box of toothbrushes or band aids you’ve been stockpiling.

In the bottom of my closet I have a huge box filled with goodies.  I keep this easily accessible as I’m in and out of it all the time.  Anytime I get free candy or treats coupon shopping, I throw it all in there.  The 15 year old doesn’t know what it is.  He thinks it’s Christmas stuff or something because on top of the box I have a huge bag of 5 Christmas garlands.  Clever, huh?  Plus our camping stuff and other things are stored down there.  On the back of the door I have my five purses hanging on the door handle.

Hall closet

This is our hall closet.  I have made it the linen and laundry closet.  It’s right beside the bathroom door.  In the very bottom is a large clothes hamper.  The middle shelf has every sheet, pillow case, bath towel, beach towel, hand towel, and wash rag we own.  That shelf is so packed and even though I did it, I still don’t know how I got it all to fit.

The top shelf is about 3 feet tall to the ceiling.  The right side has all of our extra blankets and extra pillows stacked to the ceiling.  Right now there are two paper case boxes full of stockpiled bathroom and toiletry supplies.  There is room for one more box.  Later this evening I am going to be repacking those two boxes and the one to add, then putting everything back in the closet.  After that, I’m pretty sure this closet will be at maximum capacity and functionality.

Bedroom closet

And last but not least is the bedroom closet, the big one!  This closet is about 6 feet wide and two feet deep.  It’s decent sized but nowhere near the size we need.  Because remember, I haven’t even mentioned our ‘normal’ storage stuff yet, right?  Like Christmas stuff, heirlooms, and other miscellaneous things you just end up storing as you live life…

This closet has my son’s ‘life’ in it.  Everything he wants to keep and everything I want to keep of his life is all on the top right, his clothes are hanging up on the left, and he has some things stored on the bottom left like his guitar and other stuff.  The black unit in the bottom middle was his entertainment center that is now a storage unit with room to store inside it as of now.  He uses the top as his hamper area.

The top left of the closet with all the paper case boxes, that’s mine.  That is ALL Christmas decorations, the tree, and already bought Christmas presents for my family.

Now, do you see why I keep boxes?  They allow you to pack a LOAD of stuff in them and store neatly.  I am pretty anal about organization and they allow me to compartmentalize.  If it weren’t for those free boxes, I don’t know what I would do!

Next installment of the small spaces challenge, storage pieces.  How the right piece of furniture can be functional AND store tons of stuff for you.

Small Spaces: Food Storage

Most of you have read me mention my budget bottom line before.  One of the ways I save is we live in a one bedroom apartment.  The teenager has the bedroom.  And along with a very large, beautiful sectional that I’m very partial to in the living room I also have a twin bed set up as a daybed.

Honestly I almost prefer this over a bigger place and my own room.  It’s easier to take care of for one.  And two, anyone else that has a teenager knows how space can sometimes not be a good thing.  Because they naturally start to pull away from parents some.  Which is not altogether bad but in our house with it being just the two of us there is no one else to interact with.  It’s so easy to go our separate ways with more space and not even realize what the other is up to for long periods of time.  Trust me, I know.  We lived in a townhouse that was HUGE for over a year and even the teenager agreed it was bad for our home life.  We just both prefer a close, comfy environment.

I just want to take the time to share with you doubters how you really can be creative with your space and still feel like you live in a decently decorated home and be practical and frugal while having a stockpile.

First up, my kitchen.  Hands down where we live now is THE BEST kitchen/dining space I have ever had.  It’s a full size kitchen like in a small house.  I have never had this and am loving it!  I have three sides of counters, one beside the fridge-pictured above, the stove side and the sink side.  Here is a pic of the fridge side with the cabinets open.  There is one more shelf not shown at the top of the pic.  That is where I keep all bottled condiments/dressings and things.  The top cabinet is probably 12 inches deep and the bottom cabinet is probably 2 feet deep at least.  Forgive my anal retentiveness at how tidy and organized everything is.  I am pretty much a nerd when it comes to that.  I had a visitor last week that made mention of it and teased me a bit and I had never even thought about it.  It just comes natural to me.

I do cook alot from scratch, despite what some of my stockpile ingredients may seem to suggest, so I have stuff I use often I keep having to get in and out of the cabinets.  To better utilize counter space and save cabinet space for storage, I have found, borrowed, and scraped together from friends, family, and Goodwill all sorts of decent looking storage containers.  When I fill them with spices, beans, carbs and other items they become beautiful decorations, too.  I think anyway.  Plus, as you can see with those bright red counters, it would be hard to accessorize my kitchen with that color!

Tip:  I keep the items we don’t use often and more unhealthy choices in the bottom cabinets.  We hardly ever get down there to get anything.  I have it set up as mostly long term storage.  But this keeps us from choosing convenience foods to fix quickly and more often, too.

The stove side of the cabinet is next.  I keep all my baking/cooking needs handy on the top left, all kitchen appliances in the middle above the stove and all glassware, cast iron, and my antique kitchen gadgets on the top right.  Bottom left is more long term storage and bottom right is non stick pots and pans.

The other side of counter and cabinets is only the sink and all dish cabinets so I’ll save you that one.  I have a huge refrigerator and upright chest freezer that someone GAVE to me recently.  YES I feel truly blessed!  I have been freezer cooking up a storm to try and fill it up for when I accept temp work.

I’m fairly certain we have enough food to last at least a few months if we had to.  My plan is to save up enough to last a year, just in case.  In comparison to other preppers, homesteaders, coupon shoppers, and anyone else into these types of home keeping for their family, we really don’t have much space or much stockpiled.  But I just want you to see that no matter how much space you have or don’t have you can build up supplies when there are great prices on quality products and find practical ways to store them.

Do you consider yourself to have a stockpile of goods?

Food Prep Day

I know you are thinking, “What in the world is all that mess?!?”  Sometimes I do, too.  This is a little mini kitchen prep session I did last weekend.  Tasks included:

  • peel and cut in half ten pounds of browned bananas
  • break up and freeze several cheese packages
  • veggie compost bowl and bones to make stock with
  • chicken stock and chicken to make into soup
  • a ham bone to make split pea soup
  • pork chops to cook and freeze
  • bbq sauce to reduce and freeze

All of this was accomplished in about two hours while I was getting ready to hang out with a friend, shower and at the end, my friend helped finish the bananas.  All in all a productive day.  I just wanted to show you some typical cooking “to do’s” in my fridge as it relates to my compost cooking and other frugal foodie tasks.  It really doesn’t take much planning or creativity to get to this point.  Just be willing to try and think about what you have and how to get the most from it.

What do you do to save time and money in the kitchen?

Frugal Finds

Talk about completing a wish list for kitchen gadgets. That makes my 3rd salad spinner. I think think one will be a gift as is the coffee grinder.

I LOVE Goodwill and Craigslist!  The past two weeks I have reaped a goldmine of great deals from both of these sources.  Some items I was looking for and were planned expenses and some were not.  But the ones that were not were such great deals I couldn’t help myself.  Plus, they were on my personal ‘wish list’ to own one day, so now was the time.

This things works like a charm! And it was in fabulous condition, too.

I needed a new coffee maker and microwave and started searching Craigslist ads a few weeks ago.  I found an ad from a person that was moving and was only taking personal items with them, all the kitchen stuff had to go.  I would up getting a Sharp Carousel Microwave, a Black and Decker programmable coffee pot, 2 half sheet trays for baking, 2 cooling racks, 2 sets of silverware, mugs, cups and bowls, a remote control cd player for the home, AND a set of 3 Pampered Chef pots-1, 3 and 5 quart with glass lids and unscratched non stick surfaces!  I’m not even going to ask you to guess how much all of this was because you aren’t going to believe me when I tell you…  $30!  And she tried to give me two practically new vacuum cleaners, too.  I didn’t have room in the van for them! LOL…

LOVE that coffee is ready when I wake up in the morning. The smell usually wakes me before my alarm :)

I regularly peruse the local Goodwill stores even when I don’t particularly need anything.  You never know what you may find.  One time, I found a $40 Pampered Chef Stoneware piece for $6!  I have been searching for a pressure cooker for over a year now.  Every time they have one it’s always missing the lid thingy that controls the pressure :)   Today, they had two pressure cookers so I checked them out as usual.  Imagine my surprise when one of them had ALL the pieces needed!  I got a pressure cooker for $6!!!

These will look so cute with all my linen capris and shorts this spring and summer!

But that’s not all.  I got the pressure cooker for $6, another salad spinner for $2, an Igloo cooler for $2 (not pictured), a brand new target bookcase in the box-normally retailing for $40- for $16 (not pictured), a Cuisinart coffee grinder for $4, a Krups electric ice cream maker for $6, and two pairs of American Eagle slip on shoes for $6…  is that everything?!?!  LOL! I think I remembered it all :)

I know the outside looks very used. But the non stick surface is perfect on the inside!

Looking back at the list I can’t believe everything I found!  It just goes to show, if you are looking for a way to save money on the things you want/need, you will find a way.

What is your best Goodwill or Craigslist find?
