6+ Easy Ways to Make Extra $$ Online

The past few years have been tough on everyone financially, especially those with only one household income.  Lately I have been fortunate with the blessing of coupon shopping helping my little family tremendously.  This couponing thing has opened up doors I would never have imagined:  blogging, affiliate income, saving money on more than groceries, great new friends and connections, and most surprising of all is learning about tons of new things other than couponing!  I owe all my recent financial opportunities in one way or another to coupon shopping :)

I have a few friends, family members and other moms who are struggling with some financial issues, big and small.  I have been using myself as a test market researcher to find out the worthy money making opportunities online you can use to earn some extra income or replace some lost income.  Here is what I have found:

1. Sponsored Tweets-This is an app you allow to post tweets to your Twitter page.  My sister in law didn’t even have a Twitter page but signed up for one to use this opportunity and she has been making money on it, too.  Granted, the amount of money is small!  But every penny counts :)   I have earned a few bucks in a couple months.  You get paid to Tweet and you get paid for referrals.  You can put an ad on your website or blog and when people sign up, $CHACHING$

No posts are tweeted without your approval.  This app does not give them free reign with your account.  It is totally legit and trustworthy!  If you are interested in learning more or signing up go here: Sponsored Tweets.

2.  My Likes-This is similar to Sponsored Tweets.  Except they post to your Facebook page and your Twitter page.  Again, you control the ads and the verbiage and whether or not they are permitted to post.  You can even schedule the time the post will run.  You also get paid by ad, click and referral.  I have only been using this a few weeks and already have a few bucks.  If you are interested in learning more or signing up for this go here:  MyLikes.

3.  Swagbucks-One of the BEST and easy ways to earn free stuff and $$ online is Swagbucks!  Since last October I have earned $20 in PayPal deposits and $10 in Amazon eGift Cards.  You install their web tool bar and it tracks where you go on the internet and you earn points.  You actually make money by doing the normal internet surfing you would do anyway!  These points are traded in for PayPal deposits, Amazon eGift Cards, merchandise of all kinds and other eGift Cards, too.  Plus, if you refer someone and they sign up and start using, you earn the same amount of points they do for their surfing up to a certain amount!!  If you are interested in this opportunity and want to learn more or sign up go here:  Swagbucks.

4.  MySurvey Messenger-I know what you are thinking…online surveys.  We have all been fooled by survey sites and end up being like spam and you never make any money!  I have been using this one for about five years now.  About every 3-6 months, I earn enough points for a $10 check to be mailed to me. They used to have referral credit but have temporarily stopped doing that.  The link is still up and when you click on it there is a message that says referrals will be available shortly.

Now, your demographic information will determine how many surveys you get sent.  So if you have lots of medical issues, own pets, have small kids and large kids, etc, these will all increase  your probability for more frequent surveys.  They even have a download for a little start up bar app where you get instant notifications when you have a new survey available to take and you get points for downloading.  It does not monitor web usage.  If you are interested in learning more or signing up, go here:  MySurvey.

5.  YouData-This one is really easy.  You just watch and click on a one second ad and get .03-.06 per click.  I made $1.31 last month and I only logged in and did this one time :)   So it’s another slow accumulation but still :)   Every penny counts, right?  And it only takes literally seconds to get these pennies!  You also download a little app to your computer to use and get notifications when there is an ad to watch.  You can also earn referral points.  If you are interested in learning more or signing up, go here:  YouData.

6.  PineCone Research-This is a great online survey company site.  I make more money on this survey site than any other.  It is legit and is not a spam online survey site, too.  You can trust it.  I have made $30 since last October with this site.  Every time I complete a survey, they deposit $3 in my PayPal account.  You can also earn referral credit.  To use me as your referrer, you need my email address for my account.  It is april (dot) patel (at) gmail (dot) com.  If you would like to learn more or sign up, go here:  PineCone Research.

There are a few others that I have known about or signed up for but currently do not use because of time constraints.  They are:  ChaCha-you get paid to answer questions; eBates-you earn cash back as you shop for items online; and IntelliShop-getting paid to do mystery shopping in your area.

This doesn’t even begin to cover the ways you can earn money if you have a blog!  And it also doesn’t count ways to make money Freelance Writing Online.  Stay tuned…..

Affiliate Opportunities

For those of you with new blogs that would like to earn a little $Cha Ching$, I have had great success with the Escalate Media Network.  They have a huge selection of companies to choose from and a great variety of sizes and shapes of banners to apply to your blog.  If you are interested in checking them out and making a little pocket change for coupon shopping or saving, click here.

Another site I love to check out, almost daily, that has an affiliate program is We Use Coupons.  There is a discussion group for every store you can possibly think of including the store’s deals, policies and many other topics.

Time Management-Finding Time to Coupon

How do I manage to find enough time for work, my child and his activities, household responsibilities, personal goal fulfillment and God forbid-ME time?  Throw in homeschooling, college classes, blogging and couponing and any semblance of a sane, peaceful life would appear to be out the window, right?  Not exactly….There are a few things I’ve learned with regards to time management that help me accomplish all I set out to do, including COUPONING!

The way I see it, I can’t afford NOT to find time to coupon.  I get paid way too much to do it!  I recently had my best shopping trip ever at Publix.  I purchased $311 of groceries for $64.  If you factor in the time it took me to create my spreadsheet, search the deals, get my coupons in order and actually shop it equals approximately $62/hr!  Do I need that much stuff?  No.  It was for me, my family, Christmas gifts (I’m doing baskets of coupon shopped items for everyone!), and the food pantry our coupon club started.  It was a great feeling to be able to have my money go that far!  And it didn’t take that much time and effort on my part to make it happen.

More days than I care to admit there is a feeling in the back of my mind of being unproductive because the to do list grows faster than I seem to be checking items off.  But, slow and steady does win the race.  I keep a constant eye on the to do list just as I do the bottom line budget.  Here are a few tips to help with the personal organization to help you regain control of your schedule and hopefully see how you CAN find time to coupon.

1.  Get Organized-Make lists, charts, spreadsheets, or whatever it takes so at any moment throughout your day you can see what has been done and what still needs to be done.

2.  Make a General List-For example, on my to do list today I have:  work, swim laps, trial run for cooking contest, research HT Super Doubles, work on two new websites, curriculum for this year’s homeschooling, finishing this article, cooking and picking up as I go.  I use a wonderful Day Planner called The Well Planned Day where I keep this general revolving list updated at all times.  For me writing information down is soothing.  As soon as something is written down, I can let it go. This simple act is almost as satisfying as actually accomplishing, or finishing, whatever it is that’s on that list.  I am free to think of other things I need to do without worrying about forgetting to do something!

3.  Multiple Notepads-The easiest way to keep track of things is to have a small notepad for specific areas. Here are the notepads I use:  one mini pad for my purse; one notepad in the downstairs kitchen drawer so it’s handy for bright light/idea moments as I’m cooking, cleaning, being a mom and remember what we need or have to do; one notepad for all of my blogging ideas/issues/articles/to do’s and everything else that comes up site related; one homeschool notepad I keep with my Day Planner.

At the end of the day, I consolidate all of my lists in the Day Planner by priority.  This accomplishes several things:

A.  The act of typing (or rewriting) helps to remember.
B.  Consolidating the lists helps determine whether several errands can be combined into one trip, saving gas and time.
C.  People who think about something right before bedtime may come up with new solutions to problems while they dream.  I can sleep much better knowing everything is under control and nothing is forgotten.  (On the other hand, anyone who finds it difficult to fall asleep with this method should type up their to-do list earlier in the day.)

There are a few other things you can do in your every day life to help you from getting overwhelmed and giving up on time to coupon.  One of the most important is, don’t check email first thing in the morning. Get some work done first since mornings are often when we function best.  Disown your phone.  Leave a voice mail message that quickly explains when you will be checking voice mails and returning calls.  Limit Reading Time.  You cannot consume and produce at the same time. So, limit the amount you ingest in order to be able to output more. Information overload is an extremely controllable problem.

Sign up for Google Reader and add a subscription for all the blogs you love to follow.  That way you get a brief rundown of all the entries on coupon deals or parent life or whatever it is you are interested in reading about on every site in one convenient place.  Practice keeping your inbox at ZERO! Your email inbox should be just that – an INbox. Not a big collective storage place for forgotten items. Learn to handle, delegate or move emails and get them out of your inbox.  Practice TRAF. This is trash, refer, act, file. These are the 4 choices you have when dealing with any incoming communication or action item.

Assign times to tasks on your to do list.  If you have one hour all week to prepare coupons for shopping then that’s all you have and make the most of it.  Don’t spend all  your time looking for deals and coupons on the internet.  I know that sounds like a crazy idea!  Seriously, find 4-5 sites that specialize in the stores in your area you frequent regularly and follow them a few times a week, usually when a new sale is starting.

Work in focused batches. You’re not working when you sit at your computer and move your hands. :) Instead of this long-winded work-day, break it up into focused batches.  For example, Kroger adds go Sunday to Saturday in my area and Publix and Harris Teeter run Wednesday to Tuesday.  I search for Kroger adds on Sunday evening or Monday evening.  I search for Publix and HT on Tuesdays.  This breaks up the time spent couponing.  Use leverage.  Any task that you do, ask how can you utilize the time spent working on that task to either accomplish another thing or alleviate the need to do that task again.  Find out when the trucks run at the stores you go to most often.  That way if you arrive the chances of them having the items in stock  you need are greater and time is not wasted.

Outsource.  I do get a newspaper on Sundays.  However for items on sale at rock bottom prices or that I absolutely love I use a coupon cutting site, www.couponbeat.com.  The lady that owns the site is Crystal and she has most of the coupons needed for my area sales.  I go on her site and see how many she has in stock and order.  She ships them and I receive them within a couple days in plenty of time to still use them for that rock bottom sale price at the store.  She cuts the coupons for me.  For the coupons you collect from buying a newspaper weekly, I have tried both clipping and filing coupons and filing whole inserts by date.  It has been my experience that filing whole inserts by date saves tons more time!  It does feel a bit disconcerting I have to admit, but it’s much more efficient.

Make a spreadsheet before you go on your shopping trip.  Here is a spreadsheet I used for the Publix deal I told you about.  Use this as a template and when you sit down to look at the store’s sale list fill in this sheet as you do it.  When you finish going over the list, not only have you checked your list twice but you have also already created your own shopping list, a list of needed coupons for you to pull and you will know how much your trip is going to cost and you haven’t even left the house yet!

Remember when you first start couponing you WILL have a learning curve.  Start slowly and commit what you can.  The important thing is to just try.  Don’t get discouraged when you don’t save 75% on your first trip.  I did not start having great savings percentages until I had been couponing at least three months.  After you have tried for a few months you will get quicker at the process and be able to fine tune it for your family’s needs.  When I first started I had to do several trips once or twice a week for a few months.  Because I started with no coupons and no experience shopping at stores other than Wal Mart.  After time my stockpile of coupons and my pantry stockpile started growing.  Now I’m down to one BIG trip per month and only going out when something hits rock bottom price on the I Heart Publix lists.  Old timers call this cherrypicking :)

Here are the best, standard sites for online coupons:  www.redplum.com, www.smartsource.com and www.coupons.com.  Of course you can also go to corporate websites for coupons on specific products you like, i.e. Target, Publix, Walgreens and others.

I know to a newcomer this is all information overload.  Pick the store closest to you, find their weekly sale list, print your list, collect your coupons and go.  Make it that simple of a start and try.  I guarantee the first time you save a chunk of change like $10-$20 you will be hooked.  Then like the rest of us you will be growing and learning, striving for that $0 total out of pocket!

Budget: Vacation Planning, Part I

Budget:  Vacation Planning, Part I

Realistically money can only go so far and it doesn’t grow on trees.  There are a few items that a splurge would not be a bad idea and in some cases may be recommended or necessary.

  • A good hotel
  • A great room with a balcony and view
  • Dinner at a fine restaurant at least once including wine
  • Using bonus miles to upgrade
  • A digital camera
  • Good looking, comfortable shoes

Many a weary traveler has wished they had gotten the better recommended hotel for a few extra dollars than the cheap, noisy, hot and uncomfortable cheap dive they settled for.  When all is said and done you want great memories.  And for any regrets to be so small they get forgotten in the long run.  The trick is to make it seem like you didn’t plan the trip to be affordable, but to be great!

On the flip side of worthy splurges there are some things to not worry about.  Those would include:  airport food and drinks, breakfast in bed, in room calls, room service and hotel room drinks/snacks, cheap souvenirs, commercial photos, and formal clothing or trip specific clothing you will only wear once.  To practice some of these new ideas let’s put together a trip.  As an example, a trip to the US Virgin Islands (USVI) will be used as the chosen destination to budget.  Here is a sample spreadsheet layout to use that is simple and can be easily modified:

USVI Vacation Budget for Three

$880.00        Airfare
$884.00        Cabin
$130.00        Ferry Fees
$60.00            Taxi Fees
$50.00            Gratuities
$150.00        Sailboat Tour
$60.00            Trunk Bay Tour
$100.00         Bike Tour
$270.00        Snorkel Tour
$100.00        Souvenirs
$150.00        Eating Out
$100.00        Groceries/Supplies
Total Expenses    $2934.00

This is a trip myself, my son and my brother are actually taking this fall to celebrate the completion of my bachelor’s degree.  Personally, my favorite thing in all the world is a beach.  And the ultimate beach vacation would be in the Caribbean.  My best friend went to Antigua last year.  Their hotel, or hut, alone at a resort was more than the cost of this whole trip.  So even though the total looks a bit much, for this sort of vacation it is very affordable.  I decided I deserved it!  Made a plan and have stuck to my budget for two years to make it happen.

First up, travel expense.  There are lots of choices and even more opinions about how and what you should choose for travel plans.  Two years ago we drove to Orlando to make the trip more doable for our family.  While that decision served its purpose for that trip, it’s not feasible for this one.  We have compromised a couple of points though to make flying more affordable.

One, we are driving to Atlanta to catch our flight.  There is a difference of over $200 per ticket flying out of Nashville to the USVI.  I feel a three hour drive to Atlanta is a small sacrifice to save almost $900 for this trip.  The second compromise is we are trying an airline we have never flown before, Spirit Air.  I have read the reviews and they are mixed.  Keep in mind that having a Saturday stay over during your trip and flying to an area in an off season will reduce your flight costs if that is the choice mode of travel.

We are choosing as a family to overlook the negative and suffer through a few hours for an 8 day – 7 night dream vacation in the long run.  To help ensure we don’t have as negative an experience as some do with this airline, we are paying a little extra to have the big comfy seats up front.  Hopefully when all is said and done, this won’t end up being a big regret on our trip.  I will update you the first of October and let you know!

For our lodging choice we are staying at a wonderful place called Virgin Islands Campground, an eco-sensitive resort with self-contained tent cottages.  On Trip Advisor, USVI Campground has a 100% positive recommendations from past visitors.  The tent cottages are canvas tents built on wooden frames.  They are located right on the beach and the Caribbean trade winds blow through day and night.  You can hear the surf as you drift off to sleep and rise in the morning.  Granted it’s not a five star luxury resort.  But no five star luxury resort can beat their location and atmosphere on Water Island.  And staying there is not harmful to the environment to boot.  To me that is worth every last penny of the $884.00.  Plus they have facilities to store and cook food so you do not have to eat out at every meal, saving more money in the long run.

It is unavoidable that most vacationers will have taxi fees, ferry fees and gratuities of some sort to calculate into the budget.  One word of advice, don’t be stingy.  These are locals who are opening their home up for you to enjoy.  We, vacationers, are ambassadors where ever we roam.  Generosity is always rewarded in this respect.  Plus, in such a small locale as an island, you’re liable to need their services again.  How accommodating do you think they are willing to be after you have disrespected their profession?  They make a living serving the likes of us.  Let them know they are appreciated.  If you plan a tour or day trip and have a guide or teacher of any kind, tip respectfully.  There will also be taxi fees to get to and from the airport.  And in our case, ferry rides to and from the main islands to our resort.

We are planning four different guided tours during our stay we had to plan the expenses for.  There is an all day guided tour, a bike tour, a bay scuba diving sailboat tour, and an under water snorkel tour of an underwater national park.  I chose varying activities so nothing is old and everything is new and exciting.  I chose to find local links and referrals for these tours so when we arrive I don’t have to worry about finding someone on the spot and wondering if we trusted and paid the wrong people.  These particular tours are all inclusive with gear, training on the equipment, drinks, meals and in the case of the snorkel tour it includes a day long tour of three beaches including snorkeling with a guide, drinks, meals, a theme park admission, and driving tour to the highest point of the island for panoramic views.  Everything you want to do and see almost rolled into one!  It is actually a bargain of a deal and we don’t have to pay for extra transportation because it’s included in the tour fee of $90.00 per person.

Of the eight days we will be in the islands, four days we will be out and away from our resort during midday lunch time so we will be eating out and have budgeted accordingly to accommodate this expense and one very nice dinner out for local cuisine while we are having our island experience.  For breakfast and dinner most days our resort allows for preparing our own food.  We will be enjoying our private beach getaway and the only ‘work’ we will have to do on our down days is pour a bowl of cereal, make a sandwich or grill a burger.  On Mondays, Water Island has a free movie night for residents and guests to enjoy.  They hang a huge white sheet between palm trees and relax on the sand while the latest blockbuster plays in the moonlight.  And that’s FREE!

Some of the related trip topics such as type of vacation, location, travel and dining I will be touching on in upcoming articles so don’t worry if the explanation of why that particular choice was made isn’t answered here.  I just wanted you to see of how I put together this trip budget and why I made some of the decisions I made.  Feel free to make comments and ask questions.  I am happy to share what I’ve learned over the past few years of budget trip planning with everyone!
