The Talent Behind the New, Fresh Face

For those of you who have been reading my blog pre-Apple period, you know just how far we have come in this virtual world.  I have to tell you, I am completely ignorant, by my own standards, when it comes to ‘blogging’ in terms of the professional blogger.  I have been blessed with a few very talented and supportive people along my journey that have helped to make me look really good.  And one of those people is Joy at Five J’s.

Since I met Joy online I have learned how to:

1.  Do almost any plug in work on my site imaginable;

2.  Master widgets;

3.  Create drop down tool bars;

4.  Adjust picture ratios to fit my Genesis Slider window;

5.  ‘Speak’ blogger;

6.  Create my own custom Twitter background;

7.  And create a contact page for my blog.

Joy’s life philosophy is that everyone should be a lifelong learner.  Her motto is, “Give a man a fish, he eats for a day.  Teach a man to fish, he eats for life.”  I can attest that she walks the walk with this, my friends.  More than once through this process she gave me links that were my ‘homework’ related to what we were working on with the blog makeover.  And her lessons never failed at making me a better/smarter blogger.

I am positive the email I sent her for a project request was no less than 1,000 words going on and on about my ideas, who I was, what I wanted to blog about and how my new site makeover would have to be blah, blah, blah…..  I am humbled by her agreeing to help me!  No matter how long winded, ignorant or needy I may have seemed, she still managed to compliment, support, encourage and lift me up to a higher level within myself through this process.

But you haven’t heard the best part yet.  She is a homeschooling mom, too!  If you have been thinking about homeschooling, or are a homeschooler and need resources, ideas, printables, organization, and/or ideas for enrichment activities, you should definitely check out her site.  My favorite section happens to be the homeschool for free area!  And she recently added T-shirt designer to her list of talents.

I am beyond grateful for Joy’s expertise and willingness to teach people as she works.  I have no doubt her generosity will come around more than 100 fold throughout her life.  She is now and forevermore my Myagi Blog Design Master…

Who has taught you the most about blogging, using the internet,

social media and/or technology

throughout the past few years of exponential digital growth?

Homeschool Shopping Deals

I ran into Dollar General this afternoon to grab some cheap laundry detergent to wash some outdoor things and extra blankets.  When I walked in the front door I was met with a homeschooler’s clearance DREAM!  Not pictured is 13 packs of loose leaf, wide ruled paper all for .25/each.

In two weeks I will begin homeschooling one of my three nephews and my niece.  My sister and her family are moving into my same town!!  I will have almost all of my babies near me on a day to day basis now.  In the meantime, I was in need of serious curriculum supplements.  I have all the resources I need for the traditional stuff.  But these few ‘fun’ things at DG were found just in time.

Shown above are Sesame Street Colors with Elmo, 2 packs of construction paper, Advanced learning with Hannah Montana:  Reading, Writing & Math, Disney Princess Addition & Subtraction, Disney Princess Spelling, Crayola Squiggles & Doodles Workbook, Disney Camp Rock Advanced Learning:  Reading, Writing & Math, Life Animals Picture Puzzles, Amazing Puzzles Picture Perfect Puzzles, and a Dinosaur Crust or Cookie Cutter.

And two bonuses were a Disney Princess baton for .25 and 3 activity books for all three of my nephews that were only .25/each too.  I also got several other different and fun activity books just to have, too.  I spent a total of $18 on everything including the laundry detergent and 13 missing paper packs.

What was your favorite homeschool curriculum deal you scored this year?

Enrichment Activities for Children

Let’s face it, extra money for any kind of enrichment activities for a family with two working parents is difficult much less with one parent.  We have been blessed to come across some great resources that have helped our family enrich our educational goals and brought our family time to new levels.  Here are some of the activities:

The Nashville Children’s Theatre-http://www.nashvillechildrenstheatre.org/

The NCT offers camp classes throughout the school year and summer terms.  These camps can also include before and after school care for your children.  There are scholarships available for families that fill out the application for aid.  If approved, the scholarship covers before and after care for week long camps in the summer and on spring and fall breaks.  The staff is truly wonderful and the experience the children have is unforgettable.

W.O. Smith Music School-http://www.wosmith.org/

For anyone who doesn’t know about WO Smith and the history behind the school it would be worth your time to do a little internet browsing.  WO Smith was a real person and the school started off as the Nashville Community School.  Their mission is to offer quality music lessons for fiftcy cents per lesson to children from low income families.  As amazing as that is, the more amazing fact is the volunteers who teach the private lessons to the students are all music industry professionals who practice the craft on a dialy basis in Music City USA.  The knowledge and skill the students receive is helping to shape these children’s future, not just teaching them to play an instrument.  With several major metropolitan partners the children are offered opportunities that no one else would be; for example, free symphony tickets and opportunities to perform with famous musicians and artists in the Nashville area.
